ANA Full Member and Community Champion Meet Howard Childs Neurodevelopmental Practitioner and Clinician Specialising in Neurodiversity 35 years in the NHS and charitable sectors Introducing Howard Childs—a dedicated NHS professional of 35 years and leader in the autism community. As a neurodevelopmental practitioner with the Surrey and Borders Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, Howard has been instrumental in developing autism diagnostic services in Surrey. Beyond his NHS role, Howard works in the Charity sector where he is an advocate for neurodiversity, sharing his personal journey of being diagnosed with ADHD at age 50 to raise awareness and support others. With his extensive experience and deeply personal insights, Howard offers a unique and invaluable perspective on autism and neurodiversity, making him a leading advocate and thought leader. Here is an excerpt from his brilliant insights into 'Being Diagnosed with ADHD at 50 ': "We are noticing increasingly that many people seeing us suspecting they are Autistic are also describing ADHD symptoms. The newly published diagnostic manual describes the crossover and asks Autistic diagnosticians to consider ADHD." Howard's Social Impact Pledge: 3. ADVOCACY FOR MENTAL HEALTH AND WELLBEING Empowering Neurodivergent Men Countering Extremist Narratives As part of the ANA International Men's Day Celebration (#IMD2024) Forum, Howard's talk focused on the troubling rise in violent extremism, particularly the role of social media in amplifying extreme content in the U.K. Howard highlighted growing concerns that young neurodivergent men may be especially vulnerable to recruitment and exploitation by extremist networks. Drawing on his professional expertise and personal insights, his talk underscored the importance of informed, nuanced, and individual understanding, while cautioning against simplistic and stigmatising assumptions. His presentation aimed to spark ideas and provoke thoughtful discussion about the role and responsibilities of ethically applied neuroscience in addressing extremist narratives and supporting young neurodivergent men. - King's Origins | The ANA Website
ANA's foundation remains rooted in the values that shaped us at King’s College London and King's IoPPN Our King's Origins Founded in 2022, Applied Neuroscience Association (ANA) emerged as a professional membership start-up on a mission to spread neuroscience for social good . ANA’s academic and scientific foundations are deeply rooted in King’s College London, with its co-founders, inaugural members, and current advisory board among the alumni and faculty of King’s and King's world-leading Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN). This mission was strengthened by ANA’s selection for the King’s Entrepreneurship Institute Accelerator Programme (2022–2023), with the King’s Women Entrepreneurs Network serving as a springboard for entry. Over the course of the year, ANA developed a coherent model—transitioning from start-up to early growth phase—focused on supporting members already applying neuroscience in practice, by providing an ethical framework and the foundations of a professional community. In 2024, The Applied Neuroscience Association formally relaunched led by its remaining founder, in collaboration with inaugural and ANA Advisory Board members. Now entering its establishment phase, ANA and members are pursuing a renewed mission of empowering ethically applied neuroscience for global impact —scaling the world’s largest network of applied neuroscientists and allied disciplines, connected through local Chapters and unified by the ANA Global Platform. ANA has continued to maintain strong institutional ties across the King’s ecosystem, including: King’s College London and IoPPN alumni and faculty as members and advisory board contributors IoPPN collaborations on applied neuroscience education and public engagement King’s Entrepreneurship Institute and Accelerator alumni community, including ongoing mentorship King’s Women Entrepreneurs Network, with co-hosted events and advisory support King’s School of Neuroscience, through symposia and outreach collaborations King’s Health Partners, contributing to translational and knowledge exchange initiatives King’s Health Sciences Doctoral Training Centre (HSDTC), through participation in research-led symposia What began as a bold academic start-up is now establishing itself as a truly global association, uniting a multi-interdisciplinary, and expanding Network across diverse institutions, sectors, and borders. We are committed to grounding innovations in peer-reviewed science, robust methodology, and professional practice. We welcome new members, advisors, partners, sponsors, and curious minds, applying ethical neuroscience in service of society. About King's About IoPPN
