ANA Member and Summer Intern Meet Maika Pedersen BSc Neuroscience & Psychology at King's College London During her summer internship with ANA, Maika celebrated an incredible achievement: graduating with First Class Honours in Neuroscience & Psychology from King’s College London. As the celebratory picture shows, this milestone marked the culmination of three years of rigorous study at the prestigious Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN), a world-renowned centre for neuroscience excellence. Maika’s journey was defined not only by academic success but also by her dedication to applying her knowledge in real-world contexts. She actively volunteered across various sectors, including as part of the King's Neuroscience Society, where she first connected with ANA during a Panel Discussion event. In her final year, Maika delved into the fascinating intersection of AI and neuroscience, focusing her dissertation on how individuals with anxiety perceive AI chatbot interventions as tools to achieve mental health goals. This work reflects her passion for blending cutting-edge technology with neuroscience to address complex challenges. Looking ahead, Maika aspires to make a meaningful impact in the evolving field of healthcare technologies. With her innovative mindset, creative approach, and unwavering drive, she is inspired by the potential of technical solutions to transform lives and tackle pressing global issues. Maika's Social Impact Pledge: 9. ETHICAL USE OF NEUROTECHNOLOGIES Join My TCK Conversation! While at ANA during my summer internship, I had the opportunity to co-host three episodes for the first of the new Podcast Series on ‘Third Culture Kids’ (TCKs), hosted by ANA with Interviewer, Psychologist and ANA Member, Nicola Jane Gregory. The episodes tackled aspects of the TCK experience, including identity, belonging, and the concept of home. Recording these podcast episodes was a unique and personal experience for me, as it provided an opportunity to reflect on my journey as a TCK, speaking about the complexities of growing up between cultures. Associated Professional - Interdisciplinary Contributor. Neurodiversity Expert Meet Robert Annis Organisational Psychologist, Agile Coach, MSc Applied Neuroscience Robert supports organisations wishing to free themselves of outdated paradigms hindering progress. With extensive experience in Agile Coaching, Project and Programme Management, and change delivery, he combines practical expertise with psychological insights and neuroscience to address the complexities of modern workplaces. Currently progressing an MSc in Applied Neuroscience at King’s College London, Robert is expanding his understanding of the science behind human behaviour. This academic foundation enhances his ability to develop and implement evidence-based approaches in his work. As the founder of GWS Partners , Robert focuses on driving meaningful change by challenging traditional mindsets. He believes old paradigms—such as rigid hierarchies and static processes—often obstruct innovation and adaptability. Instead, he advocates for new paradigms rooted in agility, collaboration, and a deeper understanding of human dynamics informed by neuroscience. Robert's Social Impact Pledge: 6. ETHICAL LEADERSHIP & ROLE MODELLING Unpacking Male Resistance to Change from an Organisational Perspective As part of the ANA International Men's Day Celebration (#IMD2024) Forum, Robert's Talk was led from the perspective of an Organisational Psychologist and Leadership Coach, He explored the psychological foundations behind men’s resistance to change, often rooted in values of stability, strength, and predictability. This talk examined how these characteristics, while advantageous in leadership and decision-making, can hinder adaptation in today’s rapidly evolving environments. Today’s VUCA (Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, and Ambiguity) world requires resilience through adaptability. By understanding the psychological drivers of male steadfastness, he offered evidence-based strategies for an environment that fosters greater flexibility, resilience, and growth in male leaders, enabling them to navigate change more effectively while maintaining their core strengths. COMMITMENT TO EQUITY AND INCLUSION Bridging Research and Lived Experience: An Interview During Brain Awareness Week in March 2025, our ANA Special Interest Group Leaders delivered a series of thought-provoking talks exploring brain health and their specialist topic areas. One standout session was Tijana’s Talk: “Beyond the Mask — The Neuroscience of Fitting In.” Here is a brief summary: Have you ever felt the need to hide parts of yourself to fit in? For many neurodivergent individuals, this is a daily reality—a practice known as masking. It means suppressing who you are to meet societal expectations—a survival strategy that comes at a high cost. In this talk, presented in an interview format, Tijana with her guest Fabienne Vailes explored what masking really looks like, why it happens, who is more likely to mask, and how we can create spaces where everyone feels safe to be themselves. What to Expect • Real Stories: Hear firsthand experiences of masking shared by the interviewee, describing what it’s like to hide parts of yourself to fit in with societal expectations. • Shared Struggles: Understand why masking can be especially challenging for neurodivergent individuals, and how we all experience masking in different ways, and how it can feel in everyday experiences. • Simple Science: Learn how masking affects different regions of the brain and why it’s so exhausting—brought to life by personal insights and how it impacts daily life • Research: Discover the latest evidence, woven throughout the talk, comparing research findings with lived experience to make this topic both scientific and relatable.
